It doesn't matter what the finish is... you give a once over... a light dusting, rather.... from a distance.... it gives it a worn look.
BUT, before you do that.. the white/silver model paint is for scoring looks. you take a toothpick and dip it into either color, wiping off all excess from the tip, and gently apply "little"/"light" streaks around the barrel, or on the handle (however you see fit). This makes it look like it's been in battles, been dropped, and overall seen a lot of action...silver is probably better.
NOW comes the light dusting of spray paint.... hold the can back, about 12-15 inches (important - only do once per side... I know it seems like a waste, but it's worth it.) and do a quick spray in one direction (front to back). let it dry... Flip it, and do it one more time (front to back).
This gives a weathered and worn look (more authentic in the steam punk universe)...
