One of my jobs is working for a major super market chain named Coles. I'm a checkout chick.

My performance evaluation comes in two forms. First of all there is the negligible contribution of the 'mystery shooper'. A person who is paid to custom the store and fill in a criterian based feedback about their experience. We get about 20 through in a year... there are about 100 people working in my department. Whilst in earlier years I used to get picked out, in more recent times I haven't received any feedback from mystery shoppers.

This leaves the scan rates which a printed and lidted a couple of times a week. Towards the end of last year there was a 'scan-olympics' which was designed to encourage people to work, or scan faster. The scan rate is the only real measure of my performance at work.

Today I was reprimanded for assisting a lady use her credit card. I told her the total and she handed me her card. I swiped it and asked which account, then selected credit. I handed her card back and told her to enter her pin or press 'ok' to sign. I was told off.

First of all, if your only measure of my performance is how fast I scan items, then I am going to implement stratagies to increase that speed as much as possible without being fired.

Secondly, I'm not aware of any law which prohibits a point of sale worker from touching an eftpos machine during a transaction (ie it was never mentioned during training). But regardless, my experience is the law isn't there to annoy people - its generally grounded in common sense. My commen sense is that if a person hand me thier card and says 'credit' then they are assenting to me swiping it and selecting credit. Its a free country after all...

I do it all the time, disabled people, people with poor english or even those who just dont like machines quite commonly hand over their card. So I'm gonna keep doing it, plain and simple.
