Veterans Day I promise this won’t be about me, well, mostly. Today applebees is giving vets free meals, and me being me I’m never gonna turn down free food, so I go, get my free burger, drink a beer, and I start looking around the restaurant and I’m easily the youngest veteran there, I started looking around at all the older men there, without them having did what they had done, none of us would be here today. I started thinking about all the things they saw, they stories the have within.
A man who had to be in his 70’s sat down next to me, we both paused smiled at each other and toasted to the airborne, may the next time we jump we land on our feet or on a cloud. I never asked him what he saw, where he had been, or what war he fought in, it didn’t matter, at that bar table we were both brothers, everything we needed to know was right in front of us, that there were people there appreciative of what we had done.
I soon finished my burger, paid my tab and stood up. The older gentleman and I shared a handshake and went our separate ways, as I started walking back to my apartment I thought to myself how awesome at guy was to still be around and kicking, to shoot the shit and talk football with someone easily fifty or sixty years his junior and have a beer and a burger with him all because they both shared this common bond despite never having met before he sat down at the bar. I don’t know the guy, but I want to be him when I grow up.
