Why I Play Video Games
So, last night I was playing through the campaign of Gears of War 2 with my boyfriend and it came up to the scene where Dom is searching for his wife. I'll spoiler tag it but everyone should know it by now. The scene where Dom finds his wife and she walks out of the container and he is so happy, then Fenix brings him back to reality for Dom to see that his wife was tortured beyond belief and is basically just a living corpse. As Fenix walks away, Dom cries and then shoots his wife, Maria, in the head to end her suffering. I bawled my eyes out. I'm a girl, what more can I say? I've played through the campaign five times now and I still bawl every time that scene happens. And my boyfriend looked at me and smiled and said "This is one of the many reasons why I love you." And I asked him what and he said, "The fact that you can relate with the characters in a video game. That you don't just play the game for the ability to kill things or such but that you immerse yourself with the character. That you actually enjoy the story that comes with it." And that is when it hit me, why I play video games, because it is an interactive story where you essentially become the character. A lot of people ask me why I play games and I usually say "For fun." or "Because I can shoot things without consequences" but aside from all of that, a big part of why I game is because I love the stories and the ability to live the character that you play. When a person dies in a movie, I don't typically cry, (if an animal dies, I do cry) but with a video game, I essentially become the character and that is why I love it. It is a beautiful work of art to be able to capture someone and make them feel like they are someone else. |
