And then there are some old folk medicines that are flabbergastingly accurate.

Like having a woman urinate on wheat and barley fields to see if she's pregnant. I don't recall the exact details, but they did this mythbusters-style of thing with it and proved that pregnant women have a hormone in their urine that inhibits the germination of one of these two grains, so you really could see if she was pregnant if the grain didn't sprout!
