Queensland, "The Sunshine State"
Uh-huh. This is all just so crazy... I was driving home through here less than 24 hrs before this flash flood hit. Some video footage of how fast the water was flowing A friend of mine lives in Toowoomba, thankfully he was not at work when it happened (the car being washed down the street was near the shopping centre in the Central Business District). Did I mention Toowoomba is on top of a mountain? o0 Just the sheer amount of area and towns affected is insane Thankfully, I'm in Roma atm. We only got minor flooding so far and all the roads were cut off late December for about a week (I think they'd be cut off again since Monday), but we're still keeping an eye out and staying alert. Now our capital is flooded, and tomorrow morning the city's river is supposed to peak again at high tide. And I thought I'd be moving back there in a few weeks for uni. o_o (Though the uni has cancelled all classes and exams, cause two of the three campuses are cut off and the third is only running on skeleton staff). I must say though, my home town has been extremely lucky in this season's floods, because in March '10 we had a huge flood which flooded my sister's house (it was on stumps already off the ground and the water got about 2 foot throughout the whole house), and flooded the downstairs of my parent house (not the main living area, but it trashed the laundry room, my dear old piano and lots of things we had stored down there). However this time, it only got into the yard of my sister's house and the only consequences we've had so far is that the truckies can't drive on the roads to deliver supplies from the city, so our supermarkets getting bare. But we did get some supplies flown in, so we aren't in any real trouble at the moment. Once the waters have gone down we'll be going out the the other small towns near us, like Chinchilla, to help out with the clean up. |
